No escape from increasingly complex relationships!
Whether you like it or not and whether you think you are good at it or not, your life is filled with all kinds of relationships.
There are family-members, neighbors, co-workers, in-laws, people from your community and more. And as you move through life your relationships may be becoming more and more complex, both at home and at work, it is essential for you to look at how well you are doing in this context.
At work you have all kinds of co-workers, bosses, partners, customers, clients, suppliers and you may be bound, on a daily basis, to work with different teams, within your unit or between units.
At home you may be affected by globalization and living in a diverse community that you were either brought up in or you moved to. You were maybe brought up in a stepfamily or have stepchildren yourself, former spouses with new spouses, several mothers-in-law (when one is usually more than enough), friends from various timespans of your life, people you volunteer with, work out with etc.
So my point here is that the importance of being good in building and maintaining good relationships is essential for your Success, both at home and at work.
You are here and now
Many years ago I attended a seminar that touched upon relationships amongst other things.
One sentence the speaker said has stayed very well with me. He said that if we tend to keep one foot in the past, and the other one in the future, we are bound to piss on the present!
So if you look at your relationships, both the ones you have in your private and your professional life, and see that some of them could be better or may need some rebooting please take responsibility for making things better, take action and go through the following:
- Stop thinking about whose fault it is, who said or did what. Try to find out what you can learn from all of this and be thankful for that wisdom. Forgive if needed.
- Look forward, not in the rear-view mirror, and think about what kind of relationships you want to have and be in, at home and at work, who you want to be in those relationships and what you want to be to others. Be the person that make people smile when you show up, not when you leave.
- Reach out, take the first step, show gratitude and grow as a person. The past is gone. Use today to build a solid foundation for a more fun and successful future that is reliant on you and your skill in building and nurturing good relationships.
