There is nothing wrong with wanting something more.
You may be running your own business or working as an executive, a manager or an employee. It really does not matter.
All I know is that if you are anything like my clients, you have this constant desire to do better. Even though you are already doing pretty well.
There is nothing wrong with wanting more. And it does not mean you are not thankful for what you have.
You should use this burning desire to do better as a fuel on your course, both in work and life.
Below you can find some practical recommendations or tips.
Please use them as a help to feed your desire to do better, in work and life.
Never think about yourself as being above someone else. Whether it is your employees, your neighbors or people from your community. You can learn from everybody; how you want to do things or how you do not want to do things.
Have an open mind to work and communicate with all kinds of people. Be willing to ask them for advice on your challenges, they may see some angles you don´t.
Think about solutions, rather than problems. Think as much about how you can help others as how you can have them help you.
Think highly of yourself. Act as the person and the professional you want to be.
– Communication Skills
Aim to listen as much as you talk, or better yet, listen more than you talk.
When you are having conversations it is very important to show people full attention. Listen with your ears, your eyes and your heart. When listening, stop doing anything else. Stop working on your computer. Stop thinking about how you are going to reply. Just listen, then process and finally reply.
Be accurate and proper when communicating with others. Communicate in a way that people want to listen to. Especially when working on getting your message heard.
Getting training before giving speeches or presentations is always a good idea.
It does not matter how many degrees and how much experience you have. Continuous learning and development is essential. You need to maintain and grow both your technical and personal skills. This is especially important to work on your desire to do better.
Learn from your colleagues and role models.
Read books, researches, white-papers and professional articles. Attend seminars and presentations. Watch webinars. Take online-courses.
You have to make sure you have full confidence in yourself. And you also have to be confident with yourself. If that is not how you feel than you have to work on it, by yourself or with some professional help. Self-confidence is one of the key factors in how well you do. That applies both to todays´ social and corporate environment.
It also takes self-confidence to ask for help and advices. Also to admit that you don´t know everything and that you can make mistakes. This is especially true about your employees or children. But they may know things you don´t and have input in solving your challenges.
Allow others to own their achievements, don´t take credit for what you didn´t do. Grow by helping others grow.
Where do you want to go in your career and in your life? What do you want to be known for as a person and as a professional?
It is more than OK to make all kinds of changes in your career and life. Also to change your mind along the way. As long as you own your decisions and take full responsibility for them.
Choosing to make changes is not the same as giving up.
Have a plan on how you are going to put your strategy in place.
Whether at work or at home you have to choose whom you want to spend your time with.
Choose people you trust. People who can help you grow. People you can learn from. People you have fun with. People who support you and hold you accountable for reaching your highest potential.
And as you seek this in other people for yourself be the same for people around you.
How much do you desire to do better?
