Even though I love the Beatles´ song called “All you need is Love” I´m not going to talk about that song here and now – but listening to that song regularly is surely a good idea!
In the beginning of the year I started reading quite a lot about self-leadership and heart-based-leadership.
I started to integrate what I was reading in most of the training I do on management, leadership and human resources.
I was a little shy about this to begin with, since I was afraid people would think this was too soft or sentimental.
But I could feel it in my heart that it was right to talk more about people’s hearts when doing leadership training and luckily for me, my clients (most of them leaders and managers) agree.
So in short – I think that if you want to be good at what you do, both in your private and professional life you need to be good at self-leadership. You have to be able to lead yourself before you start leading others. You have to know yourself, your strengths, what you stand for, what you want to be known for, where you are going etc. If you become good at this you will become more successful; your self-confidence goes up, you will achieve more and you will have a more balanced life and overall feel better about yourself.
When you have come to good terms with yourself and your self-leadership, towards the success you are after, you will be more able to connect with others and they will become more ready to follow your leadership. You will approach and connect with people through their hearts and you will base your decision on what feels right, according to your values and good ethics.
It doesn´t matter if you apply this to your family and friends, a non-profit organization you may work for or a profit organization – the heart is always the key to success.
Indra Nooyi, CEO of PepsiCo, a big international profit company, says that you always have to use your head, heart and hands to be successful in what you do; you cannot leave one of these elements out. If it works for her and PepsiCo then why not for you and your family or organization?
So your assignment for this week is to start loving yourself more and then you will be more able to love others.
Love yourself. Love your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and the people in the streets.
With more love we will have more success, whether you measure it by more smiles and happiness or economic growth.
