How is your career going?
What are you going to be when you grow up? This is a question you were probably asked more than once when you were a kid. Luckily we live in times where everything is possible and you don´t have to pick only one thing to be or work on, through your whole career.
But whether you work for somebody else or if you have your own business you always have to make sure you do your best to be your best, to have the career you dream of and know you are capable of.
What you can do to boost your career
Based on my experience as a manager, speaker and lecturer for about 15 years now, and an internationally certified coach now for about 3 years I have found that people sometimes fail to realize how consciously they have to manage their career, no matter what kind of career they dream of, or as Dr. Seuss cleverly puts it:
“You have brains in your head
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself any
Direction you choose”
If you start consciously to work on and improve your competence in these following 6 issues I can assure you that your career will rise to new heights.
It is not enough to have a great performance in your projects or tasks at work. Your attitude matters a great deal as well since that affects how other people see you, whether it is your boss, coworkers, partners, clients or customers. The way you handle your assignments. Or whether you see opportunities or obstacles in every corner, has an impact on how interesting it is to work with you.
- Communication Skills
In today´s work environment it is all about working in cross-functional teams, selling your ideas, getting people to work together towards vision and goals – so being able to communicate with different people, persuade people, settling different views etc. is essential.
The world is changing every minute. New technology, new ideas, new methods and ways to handle things more efficiently and in a more effective manner. So old knowledge, old ways of doing things will, at best, get you what you have always gotten and only get you so far. You have to be constantly adapting and learning new things, develop yourself so you will not fall behind.
Being confident in yourself, your abilities, skills, and competencies help you when taking on new or bigger challenges. Self-confidence makes you feel better about yourself and prevents you from wasting your energy on self-doubt. You will be more at ease in new and different situations and when meeting and getting to know new people. Confident people are also happier and happiness leads to success.
If you want to steer yourself in any way you choose, as Dr. Seuss said, you have to know where you want to go and make the appropriate choices. Having a strategy or a plan doubles, at least, your chance of success. Make a long-term and a short-term strategy. Evaluate it on a regular basis and make necessary adjustments if your strategy is not getting you to where you want to go.
Even though I know you are capable of amazing things I also know that you can do even greater things with a good team. Choose whom you spend your time with. Surround yourself with supportive people, people that are not afraid to think differently, to think big or to shine brightly in the light of their achievements.
