To be a good manager requires a lot of things from you.
You can be a manager in a private company or a not for profit organization. You can also be a manager for some association, a fund raising activity or a big event.
In all these scenarios you need to take full responsibility for your role.
I could make a long list of all the things I feel are important for you in those scenarios. And to be a good manager, or to become a better manager.
Here I share with you five of the most important things, for you to be a good manager.
- Base all your decisions on the organization´s values, strategy and mission.
Being a manager in some kind of organization means that you are a part of a bigger whole. Your decision making should not be based on your personal interests or opinion. Or the mood you are in when you make the decisions.Make sure that all your decisions are in full alignment with the organization´s map. Its values, strategy and mission.
- Know what is expected of you and how your performance is measured.
I know you want to be a good manger, or maybe a better manager. Be sure on what measures are used to measure your performance. If you are not sure, find out. It is good to know if you are doing well. But it is also very important to know if you are not doing so good. Then you get the chance to work on it and improve your performance.
- Look at your calendar and see how wisely you are using your time.
It is so easy being busy. Running around all day, answering e-mails, phone calls, talking with coworkers etc. But to be a good manger you have to think more about being productive than being busy. It is not the same thing.
Look at your calendar and make sure that you cut out everything that is not important. And what you should not be doing as a good manager.
Then look at your list of remaining tasks, all important ones and your responsibility. Divide the list in two categories; urgent and not urgent. Make sure to take time to do the important, yet not urgent tasks. This can be a lot of things, all of which are important for you to be a good manager. Like giving feedback, praise and recognition. Reading and learning new things. Planning. Looking for new opportunities. Building or strengthening relationships etc.
- Use your role to help your employees grow, as persons and professionals.
Being a manager can be a lot of fun. But this position also requires you to do things that are not always fun. Still very important. Especially if you want to be a good manager.
One of them is letting people know if their performance is unsatisfactory. Or if their attitude is not supporting the organization´s values. The team spirit or results.
Relax and prepare yourself. Make sure that you don´t do this in a punishing or condescending way. You should rather offer your employees your support and guidance. Give them the opportunity to do better. To develop themselves and grow in their challenges. Give them constructive feedback. Coach them and help them grow as persons and professionals.
- Be a person.
Connect with your people. The best way to do that is through their hearts. Allow your employees to get to know you as a person. Show interest in who they are as persons. And what motivates them.
Just remember that it is necessary to maintain some distance or boundaries. You should not be trying to win some popularity contest. You will have to make unpopular decisions. But be a person about it.
You may spend more time with your employees than your family members. Work with your employees as human beings, not only as human resources.
A manager is not a person who can do the work better than his men;
he is a person who can get his men to do the work better than he can.
